I’m Matthew Ray Scott and I’m the Managing Director of The Strategic Incubator and here is my story.

I was a military brat as a child and I would follow in my father’s footsteps by attending a Military Academy College (All male cadet corps + plenty of cold showers) on an athletic scholarship and receiving a commission as an Army officer.

My time in the military from 1985 to 1994 included being a psychological warfare specialist in charge of a propaganda development team, commanding combat medics in Operation Desert Storm in Iraq, and serving as a Captain in the legendary 82nd Airborne Division. For an extra two years in uniform, the Army was even kind enough to pay for my Masters Degree in Management.

After leaving the Army in 1994, I served in various sales & marketing consulting positions in the medical device and biotechnology market. Within six years of leaving the Army, I managed to get myself promoted to a co-developer and Vice President, Sales & Marketing of a medical device business that we eventually sold for 16x earnings.

After selling the business unit, I decided to change my story. At times, I wasn’t sure whether I was running towards or away from something, but my decision to start my own marketing agency felt right.

First, I went through a process to confirm the work I was meant to do and then I quit my job and started my own company. On paper, my decision to leave my corporate job was foolish even though I knew everything I learned and experienced as a military officer, being a successful sales consultant, and a co-developer & Vice President, Sales & Marketing of a company equipped me to start our small business marketing agency.

My entrepreneur story has been shared in the book, Escape From Cubicle Nation by Pamela Slim and various radio interviews including Career Renegade by Jonathan Fields, The Small Business Advocate and Small Business Trends.

Today, I lead The Strategic Incubator, a marketing business development consulting & coaching agency with offices in Portland, Oregon and the Greater New York City area. I’m a Professional Certified Executive Coach with The International Coaching Federation with clients including the U.S. Government, Fortune 500, International and U.S. small business organizations, start-up ventures, and best-selling authors. The Strategic Incubator client strategy has been featured in various media including The Wall Street Journal, The Today Show, USA Today, and numerous local and online publications. I also get to speak and lead small business marketing and social media workshops as a speaker for the Five Star Speaking Agency.

My life with my wife of 25 years and our children is filled with significance. Today, we live with intention next to the ski trails of Mt. Hood and the Pinot Noir vineyards of the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
